| President Donald Trump has fired Defense Minister Mark Esper, announcing on Twitter that the top US official has been "fired". |
Christopher Miller, the current head of the Anti-Terrorism Center has taken over the post immediately.
This is after the two have publicly disagreed in recent weeks. Bw. Trump has so far not acknowledged defeat in US elections by president-elect Joe Biden, and has vowed to challenge the results in court.
A few weeks before Biden takes office on January 20, Trump still has the power to make decisions.
Mr Miller was seen entering the Pentagon defense unit headquarters on Monday shortly before Mr Miller's appearance. Trump announces his dismissal.
The former special forces officer served in President Trump's national security council before becoming head of the Anti-Terrorism Center in August. In his resignation letter, Mr Esper thanked army officers and said he was proud of what he had achieved in his 18 months in the Pentagon.
"I served my country in accordance with the constitution, so I accept your decision to bring someone else to take this position," he wrote.
Top Democratic politician Nancy Pelosi has criticized the decision.
"The sudden dismissal of Minister Esper is a clear indication that President Trump intends to spend his last days in office disrupting US democracy and elsewhere in the world," said the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The KINGA BOY POST.
