Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has fired his army chief of staff, head of intelligence and foreign affairs minister.

The move comes as the army continues its offensive for a fifth day in the troubled Tigray region by carrying out new airstrikes.

Abiy's office announced the changes via its Twitter account, without giving any reasons for the changes.

Abiy continues his military campaign announced on Wednesday despite international calls for advice from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Tigray citizens have dominated Ethiopian politics for decades until Abiy took over the reins of leadership in 2018 and are fighting against his efforts to curb their overwhelming influence.

Abiy's office said the deputy prime minister, Demeke Mekonnen, had been appointed foreign minister and Birhanu Jula had been promoted to chief of staff from his previous deputy army chief of staff.

Abiy has also appointed Temesgen Tiruneh, former president of the Amhara region, as the new head of intelligence.

Four million people are at risk of being left homeless by the growing unrest in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, according to a UN report.
