President Uhuru Kenyatta has made changes to the country's prisons department's administration, especially after the recent spate of prison inmates escalated in the country, with the latest of three terror suspects escaping from the Kamiti prison.
Retired Brigadier John Kibaso has been appointed and sworn in as chief commissioner of the prisons department to replace Wycliffe Ogalo whose appointment has been revoked.
The appointment of retired Brigadier John Kibaso came after President Kenyatta at the White House in Nairobi, received a report from the Department of Corrections on the escape of three prisoners from Kamiti prison.
The White House meeting highlighted the importance of accountability in the leadership of all security institutions, as a tribute to the many Kenyans who have lost their lives, and those who have dedicated themselves to the security forces to disrupt, dismantle and win the war on corruption.
The President instructed the Minister of Homeland Security, and all security agencies in the country, to make every effort to ensure that the three escapees from the Kamiti prison use the existing authorities. The president called on all investigating agencies to take action against all those found guilty of the prisoners' escape.
Meanwhile the President has called on the prisons department to take stern action against its officers who were on duty when the prisoners escaped. The measures will include the transfer of such officers and the immediate dismissal of those found guilty.
The head of state urged Kenyans to provide any information that would help detain the detainees. He urged Kenyans to provide any information on suspicious activity and to report it to security officials.
Several inmates were initially reported to have escaped from the committee prison and so far no information has been released of their arrest.
