Kenneth Lusaka, the Speaker of the Senate, has urged the Luhya community to coalesce behind a single candidate in the upcoming general elections.

Lusaka chastised a group of Luhya elders for defying the community during his campaign visit in Webuye East on Sunday.

"They have Raila Odinga in Nyanza, William Ruto in the Rift Valley, but in Luhya territory, everyone wants to go their own way," Lusaka remarked.

Lusaka has resurrected his campaign for the Bungoma County gubernatorial election in 2022 for the second time.

He challenged grassroots leaders to mobilize for the same in the community, just as other communities safeguard their leaders.

"I entreat you, the Luhya people," Lusaka urged, "to foster our leaders so that they can compete at the national level."

If elected, he promised to put the youth first and provide them with opportunities in both the public and commercial sectors.

Lusaka praised Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula as the best senator in the country in the spirit of loyalty.

Wetangula, for one, is devoted to ensuring that the community's underprivileged and minority residents are included in the administration.

Wetangula stated, "If we disdain the minority, we are under-civilized and oppose devolution."

After meeting with professionals and opinion leaders from across the county, Lusaka announced his gubernatorial ambition.

In the camp of incumbent governor Wycliffe Wangamati, this generated concern.

In the 2017 elections, Wangamati defeated Lusaka, the county's first governor.

Lusaka was accompanied by Ford Kenya Party chairman Moses Wetangula and other MCAs on his campaign walk at the residence of Tachoni elder Patrick Sitati.

Wangamati received 197,422 votes to win a seat on the Ford Kenya ticket.

With 175,929 votes, Lusaka, who ran on the Jubilee Party ticket, came in second.
