Gunmen have killed at least 32 people and set fire to more than 20 homes in western Ethiopia. The killings were reportedly carried out by an armed group calling itself OLF Shane from Wollega, Oromiya region. "We have buried 32 people today. About 750 people have been left homeless, ”said local leader Elias Umeta.
OLF Shane is a group formed from the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), an opposition group that had been living in exile for several years but was allowed to return to Ethiopia after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018.
Violence has been reported in Ethiopia since the group returned to the country. The OLF Shane group claims to be fighting for human rights from the Oromos community, which is the largest in Ethiopia. No specific reason has been given for the killings of 32 people.
"They were killed after being told by the armed men that they wanted to hold a meeting with them," said Elias. The Ethiopian government-led human rights commission said the attack was aimed at people from the Amharic tribe.
"They were taken from their homes and taken to school and killed," said Daniel Bekele, head of the commission, adding that the death toll may be higher. Ethiopia has been reporting murder cases in recent days.
