Six people died Saturday in a road accident involving two small vehicles in the Engwata area near the Mackinnon shopping center on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

One family traveling in a Subaru Legacy from Mombasa was among those killed.

The vehicle collided head-on with another BMW speeding off the other side of the road. The BMW-type car caught fire and consumed two people inside.

Confirming the accident, Kinango sub-county police commander Fredrick Ombaka said the driver of the BMW was trying to overtake another vehicle when the accident happened.

The driver of a Subaru, a woman and two girls died instantly. The six bodies are being kept at Moi General Hospital.

The wreckage of the vehicles was towed to the Mackninnon police station. The crash has increased to 12, with people who lost their lives in road accidents between Mtito Andei and Mackninnon this week.
