Germany has begun shutting down some public activities across the country for a month with the aim of controlling the rapid spread of corona virus infection where half a million people are infected.
However, the German Institute for Infectious Diseases, Robert Koch, has reported a decline in new infections to 12,000 people in the recent past. But on the other hand the infection was on the rise in recent weeks.
The measures announced by German Chancellor Angela Merkel this trip are not as severe as in the past. Schools, shops and churches will continue to operate as usual and protests will not be banned. However, restaurants, entertainment venues, swimming pools and sports facilities will be closed.
The only public meetings that will be allowed are those of people from only two households. Central and provincial government officials will meet after 10 days to assess whether the measures need to be further strengthened or relaxed, depending on the number of infections.
